Under Your Wings

“He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.” Psalm 91.4

I got a message from a friend who said she was praying psalm 91 over my family as we were walking through the most difficult season of our lives. I remember reading these lines one by one with tears streaming down my face. I felt loved, seen, heard, and cared for. I felt comforted and encouraged. I felt as if only for that moment I could take a deep breath. I also felt within me the desire to know scripture well enough to be able to send passages like this to my people who were walking through tough things. I wanted to know scripture enough to be able to turn to truth when the lies felt like they were so loud all around me.

Another translation uses the word pinions instead of feathers and I love that word picture because pinions are the feathers that are closest to the heart of the bird. The deep feathers and when I think of being tucked and held so close to the father, held into his chest I find true comfort.

This isn’t a promise that no bad things will come to us if we believe. Rather, it is a promise that we will be ok. That God can use even this for good. A few months later we held our newborn baby boy as his heart stopped beating. We passed him over into the arms of Jesus shortly after he was born. By the grace of God, I had the promise of refuge under His wings {vs. 4}. I didn’t have to fear the terror that came at night or the arrows by day {vs. 5}. Because my heart was set on Christ he promised deliverance, he promised protection, he promised to hear me, answer me and to rescue me {vs. 14-15}.

Lauren Daigle’s song “under your wings” says it so well when she talks about every step she takes, He goes before and beside her. Every fear she has to face, He is her covering and she is safe. My girls have always loved this song, it was played on repeat for quite a while in our car. Oh, how I pray these words never leave their heart, that when they need them the most they are reminded of the promise we have when we keep our hearts set on Him.

My desire for each piece that I create is that it points you to those truths that can be so often lost in the noise. Just like when my friend sent me Psalm 91 may these small truths bring about a deep breath. May they point you to Jesus and allow you to feel seen, heard, comforted and most of all loved.
